Autism Tomorrow Conference – Hosted by Anderson Center for Autism

Internationally Known Speakers to Gather
On Staatsburg, NY Campus

Staatsburg, NY, March 4, 2015 — Anderson Center for Autism announced today that registration is now open for Autism Tomorrow, a one-day conference on May 2, 2015.  The Staatsburg based center will bring together an outstanding group of experts and advocates to discuss autism spectrum disorders from their unique perspectives.

The conference will be held on the Anderson Campus from 9:00am-4:00pm, opening with a welcome by Anderson’s Executive Director, Neil Pollack, and includes morning, lunchtime and afternoon speaker sessions. During the day, conference visitors will have opportunities to tour the extensively renovated Anderson Center campus, to mix freely with conference attendees, to participate in the Vendor Fair, and to view The Apartment, a performance piece by Anderson Players, adults from Anderson Community Based Programs. The play demonstrates for students, parents, and families, the reality of making the transition to sharing an apartment in a first-hand experience of independent living.

The Autism Tomorrow conference speakers include:

Andrew Solomon, New York Times best selling author, professor and contributor to NPR, the New York Times, and other publications. He is the founder of the Solomon Research Fellowships in LGBT Studies at Yale University. Solomon’s newest book, Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity, won the National Book Critics Circle award for nonfiction and many other awards. In Far from the Tree, Andrew Solomon tells the stories of parents who not only learn to deal with their exceptional children but also find profound meaning in doing so. Solomon’s previous book, The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression won the 2001 National Book Award for Nonfiction, was a finalist for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize, was included in The Times of London‘s list of one hundred best books of the decade, and was a New York Times best seller in hardback and paperback.

Vincent J. Carbone, Ed.D., BCBA-D., is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral with over 35 years of experience educating and treating persons with autism and developmental disabilities, and is the director of the Carbone Clinics in Rockland County, NY and in Dubai, UAE. He serves as an adjunct faculty member at Penn State University. He also holds teaching appointments at the University of Salerno, Salerno, Italy, and Instituto Europeo per lo Studio del Compartamento Umano (IESCUM), in Milan, Italy. His behavior analytic research has been published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, The Analysis of Verbal Behavior, Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders and other peer-reviewed journals. A frequent speaker on his work and teaching language and other skills to children with autism and developmental disabilities, he has provided the requisite university training and supervision to hundreds of board certified behavior analysts in the U.S. and overseas.

Russell Granet, Executive Director of Lincoln Center Education (LCE), is internationally known for his work in arts education Mr. Granet joined Lincoln Center after running his own international consulting practice, Arts Education Resource (AER).  Prior to founding AER, Mr. Granet held leadership positions as Director of Professional Development at The Center for Arts Education—The NYC Annenberg Challenge; Director of Education at The American Place Theatre; and senior teaching artist at the Creative Arts Team. Since 1995 he has been on the faculty at New York University, where he developed and teaches the course Drama with Special Populations.  Since his appointment in September 2012, he has spearheaded LCE’s highly successful fundraising efforts, its renovation, and the rebranding initiative confirming Lincoln Center’s educational mission and its message of dedication to bringing the arts to all schoolchildren.

Dr. Paul Wang, MD, Head of Medical Research, Autism Speaks, is a physician scientist who is responsible for Autism Speaks’ medical research portfolio with a specific focus of innovative clinical trial capabilities. Dr. Wang joined Autism Speaks from Seaside Therapeutics, where he served as vice president of clinical and medical affairs, and oversaw the company’s groundbreaking arbaclofen programs in autism and fragile X syndrome. Prior to Seaside, he was senior director, clinical development at Pfizer Global Research and Development where he helped lead medicines development programs for neurobehavioral disorders, including bipolar, ADHD and epilepsy. Dr. Wang graduated from Harvard College with a bachelor of arts in biomedical sciences and received his medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine. He has held leadership positions in many professional societies, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Board of Pediatrics and the Society for Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics.
